Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The hardest part of traveling is packing and leaving the house.

We’re preparing for another 3 week trek in Eastern Europe, Prague, Slovenia and Croatia to be exact. On this adventure, we’re going light, which means 21 days of living out of a 21 inch bag. It’s much harder to pack less than more.

My style of packing is to start assembling things the night before, or maybe the morning of, departure. This means there’s a lot of staying up into the wee hours, racing around the next morning, sweating, tension, and cross words. Frequently very important items are forgotten, like medications one time, or hair care another, or even underwear.

I always thought my Beloved was just being persnickety and difficult when he became stressed and angry about my haste and confusion.

This time we read a travel suggestion that you should be fully packed 48 hours before departure so you can get a good night’s sleep before a long, tiring travel day. That’s just crazy talk!

However, my Beloved requested that we give this suggestion a try.

As I write this blog, it is fully 3 hours before we depart our house. The suitcases are zipped; all toiletries, medicines, and clothing are carefully counted, folded and stored. The computer is backed up, bills are paid, and banks notified. The plants are watered, sheets and towels washed, kitchen floor clean. All that’s left is wrestling on my compression socks!

Clearly, it’s time to call the Invasion of the Body Snatchers Hotline!!!

What have I learned?

  1. 1. My way is definitely NOT the best way.
  2. 2. Being relaxed before we leave feels great.
  3. 3. Giving my Beloved the gift of being ready early is his language of love.

Till next time…

Have a wonderful fun trip. Love your advice about packing early. That has been my goal that was never fulfilled, as I am always running crazy at the last minute with lots of stress. You are so right about reducing the stress by preparing 48 hours ahead. I’m proud of you!!

Great article. My problem is my husband packs at the last minute and most of our traveling is in the car complete with bed and food. The stuff in the cooler has to be done at the last minute. We have developed a set of lists for our frequent destinations which has helped a lot. Did do a small bag trip to Manila, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Honolulu. Gotta love the crinkle fabric. Have a great trip!

Beautiful! Also my unfulfilled goal. Judy is definitely in the Anne Camp; Charlie is in the Stu camp. Have fun and return safely!

Hope that you have a grand time! For many years now I have been the “carry-on queen” and YES, it takes more time to pack that way. However, it is SO worth the convenience. I used to be more like you, Anne. I reformed! I start putting things into my bag almost a week ahead. I travel quite often, so some things never come out of my bag. It does feel great to be able to just pick up the bag and walk out the door, confident that I’ll have everything I need.

I love it. I can definitely learn a thing or two from you. I’ll try it next time we travel.
