"7 Secrets to Speaking is as much fun to read as Anne is to listen to. Her book is fast paced and in your face. Worksheets force you to take a real look at what you want to convey to your listeners while Anne leads you through the total development and delivery of your speech. My big takeaway....Make your mess your message. Connecting on a personal level with your audience is the key to a successful speech. We don't have to be perfect speakers, we just have to be real and give our audience a compelling call to action. I have over 20 years of experience in marketing and public relations and found myself highlighting passages and thinking about how to incorporate many of her ideas into my next presentation."
READ THE FOREWORD TO THIS BOOK
One day I woke up and decided I wanted to be a professional speaker when I grew up. I was 50 years old. My reasons were all about shameless self-aggrandizement. As a youth I'd been a stage wanna-be. At last I saw a way to step into the spotlight, hold the microphone and have people admire me.
My youngest children were juniors in high school so I gave myself 18 months to figure out something to talk about that people would listen to and, more importantly, pay money to hear.
I imagined that we would install our twin daughters in college and then I would catch a plane to begin my new starring role on the platform of people's hearts.
This book is about the lessons I've slowly and sometimes painfully learned over nearly twenty years of professional speaking. I'm writing it with the hope that I can shorten your learning curve towards mastering the art of crafting your message.
A great "speech" is actually just a conversation with your audience. Sometimes the audience is one person, like your spouse, your child, your boss, your customer or your friend. Sometimes your audience is 100, or even 1,000 people. But regardless of the audience size, the principles in this book are the same.
By understanding what you want to say, how your audience needs to hear it, and what actions you want them to take as a result of your remarks, you will be able to inspire and encourage people (even teenagers) to improve their thoughts and behaviors.
Communication literacy is your ticket to professional success and personal fulfillment.
This book is my wisdom conversation with you. So grab a cup of coffee and let's get started.
